Value-engineering reduces costs

Set on the soft sands along Marigot Bay and Grand Cul-de-Sac lagoon, Rosewood Le Guanahani, St. Barth, melds into the lush gardens and hills of its surroundings. It is the largest resort in St. Barth and is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and world-class service and has become the island's finest destination for all styles of travellers. Lightstar provided a long-term solution that, by strategically value-engineering the existing specifications, we were subsequently able to reduce costs by almost 40%.

Our initial focus was the landscape lighting for their extensive grounds, not just setting an atmospheric scene but equally ensuring that guests could move safely from one area to another while providing pragmatic output levels and costings. To achieve this, we supplied several samples for on-site testing to fine-tune the outputs before final approval. This work led us to provide lighting for other areas, which included 'Joie de Vivre', their beachfront restaurant and additional villa lighting.

We primarily featured a range of products from Hunza, some of which were customised to meet the requirements of the architect and designers. The combination of Hunza's solid metal (mainly copper) fixtures and PURE LED range of LED engines gave us the perfect combination of reliability and durability with equal consideration for aesthetics and value. Glare guards and hex cell louvres were utilised for the Wall and Pole Spot Lights to control unwanted glare and maintain focussed illumination.

HUNZA TIER LITE PURE LED

The Tier Lite is designed for illuminating medium level foliage. It provides 360 degree illumination on a horizontal plane and does not project any vertical light. The luminaire is mounted onto a 700mm pole to provide a soft pool of light suitable for a wide variety of landscape solutions.

HUNZA POLE SPOT PURE LED

The Pole Spot has a single spotlight which has been designed for uplighting and cross lighting. This luminaire is best suited for illuminating larger bushes, shrubs and trees, as well as architectural features. The fitting has a fully adjustable head which allows for 360 degree rotation, as well as a high degree of elevation.

HUNZA WALL SPOT PURE LED

The Wall Spot has been designed to be mounted onto walls and to provide directional light for pathways and structural elements of a building. The spotlight can be aimed in any direction, with a fully adjustable arm allowing 360 degree rotation and a 0-90 degree elevation and lockable focus via an accessory feature.

HUNZA CAST SOLID BRONZE SAFETOUCH 50

The SafeTouch 50 in-ground luminaire was designed was designed for its lens to remain cool, so people can walkover when lit. This luminaire is extremely tough, durable and waterproof, making it ideal for installation in public spaces, large-scale projects and residential areas. The cast solid bronze body makes this fitting perfect for installation where ground conditions may be harsh due to fertiliser, high soil acidity and high salt content. We used this uplight to illuminate the Royal Palms featured on either side of the reception area.

HUNZA MOUSE LITE

The solid bronze Mouse Lite is designed for vertical surface mounting in gardens and landscapes. The shape is pleasing to the eye and blends unobtrusively into any environment. A space in the wall behind the luminaire is not required for cable connection due to the design which includes a cable joint cavity. There is no light directed upward or forward into the eye.

HUNZA MINI BOLLARD

The Mini Bollard is an unobtrusive, low profile luminaire, that provides soft lighting effects on decks, railings and posts. The acrylic lens reflects light at two angles through an anti-glare mesh, directly onto the ground and horizontally to illuminate the surrounding landscape. Requires mounting onto a solid substrate such as timber or concrete.

Other products featured throughout the property were: Astro's Oslo, Original BTC Bulkhead Lights, Orluna Origin Cero miniature downlights and the Orluna Air Rose spots and Lumino's AlphaHelix for concealed under step linear, which we recommended for the stairs to the sea due to its durability in coastal positions and resistance to saline environments.

Lightstar was recommended for the project by previous colleagues; we liaised with the architect, general manager, designers and the MEP Manager. We provided the installation team with fixture and driver schedules dependent on circuit sizes and in collaboration with Hunza, we organised logistics from New Zealand and the UK to ensure fittings made it to the Caribbean efficiently.
