Size Does Matter

Marset - Discocó

We are fortunate to be involved with some of the most spectacular villas, restaurants and hotels throughout the Caribbean, and we have recently seen a recurring theme of a small pendant in a majestic arena. Statement pendants are a little like the star for the tree or the cherry on the cake; they can complete a space, and when properly scaled, enhance the finish, creating a spectacular design statement.

The size of a pendant light should be proportional to the size of the room and other elements within it. A pendant that is too small may get lost in an ample space, while one that is too large can overwhelm a smaller room. Achieving the correct scale ensures visual harmony and balance in the overall design.

Louis Poulsen - Artichoke

The height of the ceiling plays a crucial role in determining the appropriate size of a pendant. Choosing a smaller pendant in spaces with lower ceilings prevents the fixture from hanging too low and obstructing the view. A larger pendant can fill the vertical space in spaces with higher ceilings without feeling out of place.

Aldo Bernardi - Materia

Oversized or undersized pendant lights can create visual clutter and disrupt the flow of a room. Choosing the correct size allows the pendant to blend harmoniously with the surroundings. Generally, pendants should hang 12 to 20 inches below an 8-foot ceiling. For each additional foot of ceiling height, the general guide is to add three inches. However, while ratios matter, it is also helpful to experiment with the look and feel for optimum results.
